Benson is a major contemporary jazz pianist, singer, composer, arranger, and record producer who has been labeled the "rock-soul" artist. At the age of 4, Benson was studying the piano, playing classical, and listening to rhythm and blues music. At the age of 7, Benson started playing with local bands.
In 1963, Benson won a scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In the late 1960s, he worked with Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Tom Jones, and others. At the same time, he recorded his first album, Let It Ride.
He won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "Sunday Sunday" in 1969. The Grammy award was his first win for the album "Inside Love" (1968), which was the beginning of a popular series of recordings and concert appearances.
George Benson's career is a combination of jazz and rhythm and blues. His style has been compared to piano giants Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans.
